About the Celebration
On March 26, 1973, a Valley Morning Star article read: "Padre Isle Voters Back Incorporation." The election resulted in 128 of 197 voting to incorporate the town. Today, with more than 2,400 residents, and more than one million annual visitors, SPI will celebrate its 35th birthday April 10-13.
Something to Celebrate
The four-day family event begins April 10 with a kick-off ceremony to be held at the newly built Town Hall. Everyone is invited, including local dignitaries and two groups of special guests - our 35-ers, which are residents whom have lived here for 35-plus years, and our Sister City dignitaries from San Pedro Garza Garcia. There will be birthday cake and ice cream, a brief oratory on the Island's history, music, and much more.
On Friday, April 11, the SPI 35 Birthday Party with a Pirate Flair takes place at a rather festive pirate's den - Louie's Backyard. There will be "surprise" guests, live music by the Bongo Dogs, a pirate-themed costume contest, food and great fun. And, to top-off the evening, a wonderful fireworks display over our beautiful Laguna Madre Bay.
It's a Pirate Bazaarrrr Family Fun Festival on Saturday, April 12, with vendor booths, music and games at the Louie's Backyard parking lot. Storytelling takes place at the Beachcomber's Museum, and sandcastle and kite-flying lessons, and various activities to take place on the Island's beach. Vendor booths available!
Sunday's the wind-down with a Pirate's birthday brunch at participating locations.
Arggggh MATEY! More Than Just a Birthday!
Yes, SPI is celebrating its 35th Anniversary, but it doesn't have to be a one-time celebration! There's a great team of volunteers and sponsors with a vision to make this the catalyst for a signature event. Yes, that's right - PIRATE DAYS! We're happy to be setting the groundwork for an annual April event.
